When Menai Baptist Church set out to create their new space, they needed one room to do the job of many. Set in are purposed space above Innaburra Preschool, it hosts Sunday services, live music, youth programs and broader community events, with a cafe and playground beyond the main room. Partnering directly with the lead pastor, we came to understand exactly what the space needed to be, and designed it to perform optimally in every scenario.
At the front of the room, a 136-inchvideo wall is impact, water and dust resistant, a deliberate specification fora space that also hosts community gatherings. The audio system was fully designed and engineered by our team to ensure the coverage is even everywhere: QSC point source speakers to the left and right, a centre-fill speaker that keeps sound consistent across the seating while keeping it off the stage, and an 18-inch subwoofer suspended within a custom bulkhead niche. Q-SYS provides the amplification, audio processing and control throughout.
To support live music, an Allen &Heath soundboard and a Blackmagic controller in the control room provide a professional standard of broadcast for anyone joining remotely, with XLR plates at the front of the room routing instruments directly through the desk. A camera at the front tracks the presenter automatically, with exclusion zones set so there is no nuisance tracking, and a confidence display at the rear allows the pastor to maintain engagement with the congregation rather than turning to the screen. Overflow displays and audio extend through the hallways, kitchen and children's areas, and out into the yard, so everyone can follow what is happening in the main room. An Apple TV input means the preschool and youth groups can run something as simple as a movie day with the same quality of audio the band enjoys.
The result is a room the whole community can use, whatever the occasion, with the same quality of sound and vision in every case.
